Universal drive adapter IF107-108-2 not working with 3.5 inch drive

I bought the IF107-108-2 universal drive adapter off this site and it seems to work with 2.5 inch drives and ssd's but when I connect a 3.5 inch drive to it it will not spin up. It tries about 5 times then stops.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @derekbrown25607

2.5" HDDs do not require external power to be connected to them. They require only 5V to operate and the power is fed to the drive through the same connector as the data. Most probably the 5V is supplied by the USB cable attached to the device

3.5" sata and IDE HDDs require external power i.e. 12V and 5V to be connected to the power input of the drive.

This is provided by the external power adapter that is supplied with the kit. There's an image of it here but I can't verify what type of power connection it has to the 3.5" HDD. Presumably it's the small 4 wire (red, 2 x black, yellow) cable.

Perhaps check if there's 12V DC on the yellow wire of the power cable connected to the 3.5" HDD

Turn your current hard drive into an external drive with this adapter. Image

So I checked power on all the wires. the yellow wire is actually 12v and red is 5v. one of the ground wires is not used so there are 2 ground pins on the drive connector that do not receive a ground but the 3 ground pins towards the data connector that do . Everything was checking out fine. I plugged it back in and it worked this time but I could not move any data to it, it was extremely slow. I tried jumping the ground wire so the other 2 pins had a ground and it did not work. I put the drive back in my sabrent drive holder and it works perfectly

My mistake regarding the 12V colour - apologies. I've corrected my answer so as to not mislead anyone else

Not quite following when you say ".....tried jumping the ground wire so the other 2 pins had a ground and it did not work."

Just verifying that you measured 12V between the yellow and both of the black wires in the supplied 4 wire power cable when it is just plugged into the power adapter only and not also the drive adapter?

Yes I have 12v and 5v but only one of the ground wires is used so thats why I jumped them. I jumped from the on that is used over to the one not used to ground the other 2 pins on the drive. I will try to attach a picture of what I’m talking about
